It must have been a decent night’s sleep as we didn’t surface until after 9am!
For our first trivia of this leg, we knew that Robert had stayed on and we were joined by a younger American lady from Virginia and a lady from Adelaide. Although we did OK, we still didn’t win.
We then headed up to deck 18, Skywalkers for the Cruise Critic meet and greet. Quite a crowd this time and we seemed to spend more time talking to the senior officers than the passengers. Maybe they recognised us from last week. We also chatted to shoe fetishist/collector, CD Duke. He has 27 pairs on board… Today’s pair were black and less flashy than usual, so I asked about them. Apparently, Duke took part in a British TV show called ‘Stars in Their Eyes’. Unlike the Simon Cowell shows of today’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, in the ‘Stars’ shows, the contestants dressed and performed as their chosen stars and Duke, as a very young man (then), performed as Jerry Lee Lewis - and won. Part of his prize was meeting his idol and he was gifted a pair of his shoes which were autographed. At the time they were way too big, but Duke grew into them and they were the shoes he was wearing today.
I tried to cut down a wee bit on lunch and managed to restrict myself to split pea soup and a piece of chicken and we sat outside at the rear of the ship, still on deck 15, in glorious sunshine, happy to take over a copy of Saturday’s English newspaper, the Daily Mail. There is growing unrest in the UK which seems to be politically motivated and echoes the dissatisfaction in the USA, where the ‘losers’, can’t seem to accept that they are fortunate enough to be living in a democracy, where they can not only vote, but also have the right to speak out about the government - without being shot!
For the afternoon quiz, once again we had Robert and the young lady from the USA along with her two travelling companions. All 3 are chemical engineers and were at university together. Even with their combined, young brains and Robert’s (he is a retired maths teacher), we STILL didn’t win.
For the first formal night of this part of the cruise, we skipped the traditional captain’s welcome and the champagne fountain. My aim of cutting down on food evaporated as I enjoyed the crab and something quiche, the delicious French onion soup and roast lamb.
We also skipped a repeat of the production show ‘Magic to Do’ and opted for comedian/magician Taffy Spencer (again). Whilst we were waiting, an American woman was loudly complaining to her friends that she was embarrassed to be turned away from the dining room because she wasn’t dressed to the standard expected. Sorry lady, you weren’t! A polo shirt and casual trousers is not up to standard and the rules are well publicised. Makes a change as it is often the Americans complaining about the appalling dress standards of the Australians and Kiwis. The Explorer’s lounge wasn’t very full, so once again Taffy, like John last night, joked that it was the first time he’d played to a furniture exhibition. We enjoyed his show again as he likes daft humour and so do we.
When we left, it still wasn’t dark and we crashed at about 11pm, with no alarm needed for Stavanger tomorrow, our first ‘new’ port of the cruising so far this year. We have just three Princess tours booked and all seem expensive. We know that Norway generally is expensive and as we have several ports there, we do have some Norwegian Kroner fir incidentals.
